Romanian-Bulgarian border: An “Odyssey” for drivers. The Giurgiu – Ruse Bridge (also known as the Bridge of Friendship) is a major international road and rail bridge that connects Romania and Bulgaria, spanning over the Danube River. With a length of 2.8 kilometers, the bridge, inaugurated in 1954, forms part of the international highway E85 route and is the most frequently used customs border crossing for Romanian routes.
However, the Bridge of Friendship has, unfortunately, now also become the Bridge of Delays. Since the beginning of July 2024, repair works have started on the bridge, which are expected to last at least two years. Traffic now flows through only one lane, resulting in long queues and significant delays.
Additionally, due to the low water levels of the Danube, the ferry at the Oryahovo-Bechet border crossing between Bulgaria and Romania is often out of operation. OMONIA TRANS informs its customers that, due to these factors, delays are occurring which, unfortunately, cannot be predicted.
